Notes on MacWorld Keynotes

Filed under: Tech — sandblade @ 10:28 pm

Well I guess I can’t ask for anything more from Jobs this year. The new Apple products are amazing and once again they’re on the right track. Here are my thoughts after watching the keynote speech.

  • I’m definitely not buying another Mac until Tiger comes out. The Tiger enhancements are simply amazing and there’s no point in buying a system that I just have to shell out another $130 for in a couple of months.
  • Dashboard looks really cool. The bittersweet thing is that it’s exactly what KDE’s Karamba tried to do. However unlike Karamba I bet you it actually works and is easy to use. Karamba was a good idea but poorly executed. It was almost impossible to install and once you got it installed it wasn’t that great. Dashboard widgets, on the other hand look really useful as they can work with the OS and other applications.
  • Everyone likes to fill out their fight card with Microsoft vs. Apple. But the truth is they aren’t really competing. Microsoft really doesn’t care about the end-user or usability. Microsoft is more concerned with distribution. They want to control how and what you use to get your information. Hence MSN, Passport, .NET, Visual Whatever, Active Directory, etc. Microsoft couldn’t care less if saving your photos from email is easy. They just care that Exchange delivered your mail to you on your PC after you connected to the net through MSN. Apple’s real competition is Google. Both are battling to make technology accesible to mere mortals. They’re both trying to make information usable, and make computers less like computers and more like humans. So it’s Picasa vs. iPhoto, Gmail vs Mail, and Spotlight vs. Google desktop search…
  • In your face Longhorn. Spotlight’s gonna blow the doors off of anything that’s gonna be in Longhorn. Microsoft has been struggling to just even build a database filesystem, WinFS. They were supposed to have it for Windows 2000, then XP and then Longhorn. It looks like Microsoft is going to miss shipping WinFS for Longhorn. The purpose of having a database filesystem is to be able to search the content of data and do useful things with it. Well Spotlight does that now, and it doesn’t use metadata to do it. Spotlight is actually parsing the content of the data. Jobs demonstration was impressively fast. Sure he’s probably using a top of the line dual G5, but hard drives can spin only so fast. Plus any developer can integrate and leverage Spotlight in their apps. It will revolutionize the way we interact with our computers.
  • I’m also pretty happy that there’s a flash ipod. I’ll probably wait until all the bugs are found in this generation, but I can’t wait to get one. It’ll be great for storing files for work and listening to music.
