I’m Done With Music

Filed under: General, Things I Can't Get Behind — sandblade @ 11:21 pm

I had a great job in college and my boss was a young guy, cool, and only 4 years older than me. But he got married young, had a kid, and listened to Air Supply. I thought to myself, “How can anyone that young listen to Air Supply?” But that’s how it goes you get older, get too busy to keep up with what’s cool, and the next thing you know you’re frozen in time like Han Solo in carbonite. I was pretty into music, as it was such an identifier of your tribe. You could go to any social situation and ask, “so.. what do you listen to,” and immediately decide if you wanted to pursue talking to that person.

Well right before my carcass nears the triple decade anniversary (I’m carbon datable!), I’ve decided I don’t care about music anymore. This all came about when I really wanted to get an iPod and realized I don’t really listen to music anymore and that I wanted the extra space to use as a portable HD for schlepping service packs and updates for work… Ugh.. Man I’m turning into my friend Orville. I keep on thinking of that line Grandpa Simpson says, “I used to be with It, and then they changed what It was. And now I find It scary and weird.”

I guess my point is that I liked music back when I was into it, and now I wish they made more music like it. I suppose my boss felt the same way about Journey and Air Supply. The nice thing now is that tickets to see bands I liked in the 90’s are cheap, and the venues are not as big. Plus I have better things to be spending my money on now. So I’m giving up. I’m returning my Yellowcard T-shirt and Franz Ferdinand poster. There’s no point in trying to fake it anymore. The fun thing about Franz F. is that it’s turned into my new Autozone song. Basically I find myself humming all day, “I say you don’t know, You say I don’t know… something something something… Take Out Trash” The last three syllables I usually replace with whatever I’m doing like “Put On Pants” or “Eat Some Lunch”. Try it, it’s even more gratifying than “Get into the Zone…”

The Ultimate Coffee Maker

Chemex!I’ve been looking for a new coffee maker since our old Mr. Coffee died. When I was a kid I remember my parents had the same coffee machine for almost my entire adolescence. I think their last coffee maker barely made it a year. It seems all coffee makers are junk. Go to your nearest department store and marvel at what passes for a coffee machine these days. The price has gone way up, but if you notice the $100+ Krups, Melitta, Cuisinarts, etc are just as cheaply made and full of plastic as the $30 Mr. Coffees. They just have more fancy electronics and stainless veneers. Look at the reviews on Amazon the expensive ones get just as many bad reviews as the cheap ones.

Well in my frustration I turn to Alton Brown to figure out what to do. Of course the AB way is always ridiculously complicated. I tried his little cup filter contraption and didn’t like it - too much work. And then my friend Rod C. turned me on to the Chemex coffee maker. It revolutionized my life. No moving parts, no heating element, it makes coffee similar to the AB approved way. The coffee isn’t bitter, and I have complete control over the brewing process. I love the Chemex because it has a weird hippie look, it’s hand made, and it only costs $23. With proper care it should last forever. Apparently it was invented by some German Bauhaus dude. Man they made ugly buildings, but hey it was worth it just for the Chemex.

Shout Out To My Peeps

Hi Marion S. and Sarah D. I am deeply touched that I have a fan club. I rarely post articles and I read the comments even less frequently than I post. I’m glad you’ve found me, and I promise to write to you soon. Keep posting comments so that I have a reason to check my own blog more frequently.

As to my other peeps, I plan to be more prolific with the blog. I got some killer ideas and a severe case of Sudden Onset Grumpiness (SOG), so watch out Andy Rooney! This blogs a rollin’
