If I were Elvis rich I’d create a research group that would do nothing but create scientifically valid polls and studies for questions I’ve always had. E.g. how many unopened Yankee Candles does the average household have? Theoretically speaking Yankee Candle should be out of business - simple supply vs. demand. There are probably millions of candles stockpiled in America’s linen closets. I need a study to get to the bottom of this.
Other ideas for studies:
- Are there any statistically significant differences between cat people and dog people?
- Does anyone actually think Patchouli smells good? And why do habitual marijuana smokers think it hides their drug use?
- What percentage of the population finds the Family Circus funny.
Yeah fixed gear bikes are all the rage with the hipster art school crowd. Sure it’s annoyingly trendy, but at least they’re riding bikes, and more bikes on the road is a good thing. Unfortunately a lot of these fixed gear bikes are being ridden without any kind of mechanical brake. Simply put, this is insane. Recently in Santa Cruz a young rider, Lucien Gregg died on his fix gear sans brakes when a fedex truck made a right hand turn in front of the cyclist. More than likely Gregg was in the blind spot of the driver, and being unable to stop immediately Gregg probably collided with the truck (sans helmet) and died. Here’s what the Santa Cruz Sentinel wrote:
Gregg, a San Francisco State theater and stagecraft student, died when he crashed his fixed-gear bicycle just off East Cliff Drive on Jessie Street. Gregg’s bike didn’t have a brakes and he was not wearing a helmet. Police are still investigating if he collided with or was hit by a FedEx truck seen in the area at the time of the crash.

I’m no Luddite. Infotech pays my bills and puts food on my table, but lately I have to say I’m really unimpressed with what’s new out there in IT land. It seems we’re at the top of the S curve of what Infotech can do to enhance our lives. New stuff is being created just to be created. It doesn’t solve any problems it just adds to the cacophony of what’s already out there. Do we really need another social networking site, another search engine, another map application, another twitter clone, another IM client, another Office Suite, another OS, etc? Does Vista or Leopard actually help you DO anything better, faster, easier?

I have to say this isn’t entirely original. This is what I was thinking about after listening to Slate’s excellent political gabfest podcast.

This week we had to put down our cat Simon. He gave us twelve great years as our friend and housemate. Any of you who knew him can attest to his remarkable personality and eccentric behavior. Even anti-cat people thought he was tops. We miss you terribly and each day seems a little dull without you little dude.
